WINGING IT SINCE DAY ONE!
I spent five years flogging framed album displays & music prints online and at the Barras Market (check out the picture). A real shop? Sure when I won the lottery. Then, in 2018, a trainer box-sized shop popped up two minutes from the Barrowlands Ballroom. The rent was (just) within reach, and the itch to run an actual record shop finally kicked in. I signed the lease before common sense could take over. Cue a midnight flit across the Gallowgate: I’m dragging crates through the door, staring at four very bare walls, and wondering what the ****, why does this wee shop feel the size of Ikea
The first couple of years were a bit all over the shop literally. I didn’t really know what the place was meant to be yet. Most of the stock was just my own record collection and framed music artwork I’d been selling for years. I always wanted to sell new vinyl properly, but taking that jump felt massive especially money-wise. Eventually, I took the leap and started stocking new vinyl pressings and official band tees, and the shop has been growing steadily ever since. It finally started to feel like its own thing not just a side hustle or a glorified music room. Though to be fair, it still kind of feels like a glorified music room ”just in the best way.”
It’s by no means perfect or finished but the journey is only just getting started.
“There’s a few pics floating around from when I was winging it even harder than I am now
have a nosy.”
So what’s it like now?
Most mornings you’ll catch me rattling up the shutters around 8 a.m. the shop doesn’t open till 10:30, but the early start lets me tackle the boring stuff. Coffee in one hand, with some highly questionable ’80s cheese blasting for morale, I scribble today’s to-do list and pack the overnight online orders. After a quick waddle to the post office, it’s straight into the routine: taking in deliveries, folding a mountain of band tees into vaguely straight piles, and scanning emails for new releases. Give it an hour and both the soundtrack and to-do list will have changed completely.
Some record shops act like you’re meant to know every obscure B-side before you’re allowed to speak. Say the wrong thing and suddenly it’s all side-eye and silence. It’s a record shop, not a test ask away. I’m still learning myself, so no question’s a daft one.
Whether you’ve been digging for decades or just fancy starting a wee collection, you’re always welcome. Need help picking your first record? Curious what’s playing? Just shout.
The shelves are full of everything from ABBA to Weller, Bowie to Eminem plus plenty of ’90s classics and a solid helping of mod, soul, ska, and punk.
The shop is far from perfect, but that’s the charm of it (or so I say anyway). So if you’re looking for a new record shop to browse with plenty of decent prices come on in and have a proper rummage. There’s always something you didn’t know you needed until you find it.
And no, I won’t judge you for the Chappell Roan album you’ve been eyeing up ,promise. I might even have my own shop copy behind the counter
Just two minutes from the Barrowland Ballroom, the shop’s a cracking stop before a gig or the place to crawl back to the next day when you’re skint and still haunted by the record you nearly bought. Don’t worry, I’ve been there. Fire me a message before doors and I’ll put your picks aside no need to be bouncing round the Barrowlands with a carrier bag full of vinyl.
Pop in for a pre-show rummage, kill some time, have a natter, and maybe leave with a new favourite under your arm. I’ll be here
still winging it.
IT'S ME, HI
